If you like Westjet Rewards, this card has a close cousin worth looking into. In addition to the yearly expense, other costs on this card add up quickly too. However, travel benefits can't be used on a regular basis meaning you aren't getting the most bang for your buck, especially considering the annual fee. Overall, the West Jet Mastercard is an amazing credit card because it is accessible to the majority of Canadians. Not everyone travels frequently or wants to put all their money towards lowering those costs, but if that's not you, this might be the most ideal card for your needs! Keep in mind that travel benefits are not the most accessible to everyone. Although, those charges won't be an issue if you manage the card effectively. While the rewards of this card are superb, it comes with an annual fee. In addition to financial support, card holders reap the benefits of West Jet's various travel services, including travel assistance, worldwide accepted transactions and travel insurance. By using this card, individuals can collect and redeem points for their next vacation. The West Jet Mastercard is an excellent choice, especially for individuals who have a travel bug! Once a year, you can book a round trip flight for a guest anywhere in Canada for just $199, plus taxes and fees. As of July 2019, this card now offers a companion voucher. For a $39 annual fee, you get 50 welcome West Jet dollars, 1% back in West Jet dollars for everyday purchases, and 1.5% on West Jet flights and vacation packages. for transaction receipt that does not relate to the current statement. West Jet flyers who don't meet the income requirements for the World Elite card or who can't tolerate the annual fee should check out the West Jet RBC Mastercard. One of the visa reps mention they sometimes have promotions to get 15% more points on conversion. Edit: people are mentioning the companion flight benefits but how about the usage of actual points? Keep in mind the reward exchange from RBC Infinite is pretty awful. I have the Infinite Avion, which has an annual $120 fee. Got the 15000 points for signing up and accumulated about 80000 more on purchases. Just recently used up 92xxx points for about $800 worth in rewards. So technically, it cost $92000 to get $800 back, plus the annual fee. If you use the free cards such as the RBC Cash Back, which gives 1% back on all purchases and 2% on groceries, you would have gotten $920 back instead of $800 from a restricted catalogue. The only way I can now justify keeping this card is for flights that are only adjacent to Alberta, since it costs 15000 points for a round trip to any city. It still isn't even worth it to accumulate points for long haul domestic or international flights because of the maximum ticket price as per the redemption grid. You'll get better value converting out your points to Avios. For example YEG or YYC to Seattle is only 7,500 points. American Airlines has some good redemptions too, you can see how many miles it will cost on their site before transferring the points. Just do a search and check the use miles box The big perk of the Westjet card is the companion fare. If you have a travel companion and fly West Jet the card makes a lot of sense. If you travel solo or aren't particularly loyal to West Jet the Avion card makes more sense because it has more partners and you can even transfer to West Jet if you change your mind. RBC lets you product change cards if you find the card isn't working for you. I had the same choice and I went for West jet Elite given the tradeoffs and my spending level. My monthly spending were below 1000$ a month, at which rate even if Avion offered attractive conversion options, they were useless for me. In comparison, on it's own WJ seemed like an inferior card. But the companion pass baggage fee made me go for it. I looked at the use of west jet dollars, and between Vancouver and Toronto, I could get a one way flight for as low as 125 west jet dollars tax. So welcome bonus was worth a return flight for me (Avion bonus would have covered only the 1-way trip, in comparison. The companion pass benefits, although were attractive (and made me chose WJ), seemed somewhat tricky to me. There are times when YVR-YYZ flights get to 500$ , where a companion seems like it would be a big benefit. However, I can only use companion pass when I also fly, and for return flights. For high-price days, I would have to suck up one high price ticket (and Kayak etc are ruled out). In comparison, Avion gives 1 RBC point per dollar ( 25% if used for travel related conversions). So the companion pass benefits would be somewhat negated by the higher ticket price. I would need 15000 Avion points for a 1-way flight redemption in the US (with a flight price cap of 350$). Nevertheless, it seemed worth much more than the yearly fee. I could get a 1 way flight in Canada-US for 125-200 WJ dollars plus tax (~35-50$) with seasonal availability. Westjet mastercard rcb finance The Additional WestJet Dollars do not apply to product changes from another RBC credit card to the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. The World Elite Companion Voucher is offered to new WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard cardholders only, and annually thereafter 4-6 weeks after the annual fee is charged. WestJet Vacation packages will be credited as WestJet dollars, valid for 24 months. To request cancellation of a WestJet Vacations package, please contact us directly. If you booked through a Travel Agent online or directly, Corporate Travel arranger, or another airline, please contact them directly. I had a vacation booked with West Jet, due to COVID-19 I had to cancel it. They said the card is covered only for trip interruption, but not a cancellation. I told that this is an unforeseen act and should be considered interruption because I was forced to cancel my trip, but they refused. For a card with a $119 annual fee should cover everything like other cards. Disappointed with their services and consider cancelling my card. I have had so many negative experiences with my short use of this card. First, the card I received the tap didn't work on it, and the customer service was brutal - they suggested to reset my pin and then try to purchase 3 times and it will activate. Complete garbage - I ended up waiting over a month to get a working card. I still have issues with the swipe on it for purchases, and now the most important issue: Trip Interruption or Delay - if you purchase this an expect to have any answers when you need it most - you have the wrong card and coverage! We got stuck mid-flight back from our destination due to weather, our coverage with this card was not easily found online and when we called the number on the back of the card the agent we spoke to was unable to give any information about coverage. So if you are ever in this situation please know you can call 1-800-222-9978 for the claims department and not the number on the back of your card! Customer service and so far caused more issues and stress then solving the issues that they promised! If you decide to get this card make sure you read all the fine print. They do not actually fly to many locations outside Canada. So you will have to fly with another airline to get to the final destination. Meaning you cannot use your vouchers for many of the flights outside Canada. Free checked bags are only good when flying with them. So if you do book a flight without vouchers and have to fly with another company on your way back you will have to pay for your checked bags. So basically unless you know that they fly to your final destination this card is not actually worth what you pay. When my card was skimmed with this credit card, it took numerous phone calls to be issued a new one. Once I was issued a new one, it takes 5-10 business days for the new one to arrive. With the BMO World Elite Master Card, a new one was issued without my need to call and arrived within 1-2 business days. I was approached in an airport, so out of boredom applied. I received a letter saying the card was now at a branch (160kms away) and I would have to go pick it up! I phoned and said “you want me to lose a days wages, drive nearly 400km over a mountain pass to pick up a card YOU offered me? I was in a town with an RBC brand asked if the other branch could send it there for me to pick up.. SO they aren’t open Sat, you work Mon-Fri, how is this ever going to happen??? Upon requesting an account balance I was, on 2 occasions, expected to reveal private information repeatedly. When I refused to repeat and acceptable rational I was denied service which is in direct conflict to the Office of the privacy commission. My repeated request for them to clarify my rights and the Commissions authority was denied. The operator /representative(s) refused to identify themselves on repeated requests. And if you talk to them record the conversation, Under Canadian law you have the right without their consent or knowledge. I instructed that the $130.06 they claimed as owing was in error based on previous recorded conversations. If you want a copy of my conversation contact me .... Recently, had to cancel a flight 2 weeks before departure due to a dear friend passing away suddenly after a long-standing battle with cancer. Then asked what they were prepared to do to rectify. The woman I spoke to on the phone had no compassion and was of little help. I asked for only our West Jet dollars back or even a credit on my account, which I would put towards another flight - this request was denied. I've had a West Jet Master Card for over 5 years and use it as my primary card every day. I am full of regret spending thousands of dollars with this card as it goes straight into the pockets of heartless capitalists. I can't believe in a time of true hardship and loss, they couldn't bend the rules and give me a credit which in turn, I would be spending with on their airlines. I am truly disappointed and will be cancelling my card immediately and spreading word about this horrible event. I made a large purchase and when it was delivered, Westjet world elite Master Card didn’t stand behind me the consumer it protected the merchant after the expensive product was delivered damaged, I no longer have any Master Card and moving all segments out of RBC. If I'm going to use a credit card, I want something out of it besides an interest charge. Have had this card for a few yrs now, I use/apply my West Jet dollars when I'm booking & paying for our flight. Husband just ditched his previous card, no rewards at all on it, and got this same card. So I got suckered into getting this card due to the low annual fee and the bonus West Jet dollars upon signing up. Turns out that you can't use West Jet dollars for the whole fare. West Jet flights outside of Canada are more expensive than other carriers, so you aren't saving any money by using West Jet or having West Jet dollars. By the time you use the card, you're going to need to spend a few hundred West Jet dollars and, remember, you can only use it for half the ticket cost, so you end up wanting to fly to the Carribean or Europe. The companion fare to go to those places are $299 and $399. All of the base fares are cheaper than this, so the companion voucher is useless. Finally, they market that West Jet members can use their dollars to book flights to partner destinations. The only problem is you can't use the website to do this and customer service can't do it as well! You have to book through a travel agent and then use your West Jet dollars there. Also, any long-haul flight, where a leg is with West Jet, is priced so much higher and takes so much longer than a flight that takes you there with one carrier, so, again, booking partner flights is useless. So I basically wasted half a year with this miserable card when I could have been getting hundreds of dollars in cashback using another card. I have tried to use my west jet miles and my companion voucher and the policies do not allow it. Perks (West Jet) okay; a bit of a challenge to find available flights. While individual people are nice if you ever get through they lie. I spoke to someone who put me on hold forever to tell me that. I would repeatedly ask for confirmation if there were any other charges and they'd assure me there weren't but there always was. There is absolutely no point to paying for this card. There was also some glitch between my bank and this card and payments didn't connect. It's the only bill I've ever had trouble with; never did figure out the cause. Not worth the frustration and expense so I cancelled card. They do not deliver this card you have to go to the bank to pick it up ( waste of valuable time). "Hi we were wondering why you haven't activated your card? At the bank they set it up wrong, so I returned to the bank to get it rectified. I called telephone banking twice- was on hold for 20 minutes each time. " In the end, no one helped, I finally got my card activated on my own through the website. Always pay off the balance so I don't care what the interest is. Now I am trying to get the app working, app matches the activation process... I will see if this card serves me this year, only because I want the Westjet rewards, if this is how the activity on this card is going to be I will not be renewing. I have had several shocking moments with the credit card. And you have to pay it off to the dime every month. In addition to accumulating West Jet dollars to apply to flights you get a free checked bag on all WJ flights and an annual $99 companion flight anywhere in North America. I had a balance of $17,000ish in a high spending month (I use it for work), and cash flow was low but I made sure that I paid $15,000 (worked hard at this) by the due date, so interest would be minimal. Interest was charged on the full $17,000ish, this is how this card works. If you pay even $1 short, you might as well have paid nothing, interest will be charged on the full amount. I usually pay my cards in full, but sometimes you just can't. And keep in mind each price will have the standard taxes and fees bill added to it as well. But some unfortunate changes to the voucher are taking effect on April 1, 2020. Yes, the companion voucher is going to cost more to use. Here’s the new pricing structure for using the voucher starting on April 1: It certainly isn’t great news. An extra $20 is not a terrible increase for the Canada and Continental U. voucher, but the increase of $100 for sun destinations is a tough one to swallow. Mastercard concierge service is also being lost as part of these changes, but all the World Elite Mastercard benefits are still available. And RBC has stated that exciting new benefits are coming in its place. The companion voucher with the is also changing, but this time for the better. Right now, the companion voucher costs $199 plus taxes and fees for flights within Canada. If you’re not enamoured with these changes, here are a few alternatives to keep in mind. Now, it’s being expanded to include the Continental U. Keep in mind the Westjet card’s normal rate of return is 1.5%, so all 4 of these cards beat that by a significant margin. When it comes to companion vouchers, it can be hard to find ones that let you pay cash for the 2nd ticket. West Coast, with no options to use your voucher within Canada. But for the right person, the voucher can be of great value. Usually you have to redeem extra miles, which may not be possible depending on your reward bank. C, and a few border cities like Seattle and Detroit. It costs $99 USD (roughly $130 CAD) plus taxes and fees to use. In this regard, the voucher that comes with the is one of the few choices available in Canada. And while that’s more than the West Jet voucher, Alaska Airlines taxes and fees are lower than West Jet. And that same price applies to anywhere Alaska flies, including Mexico and Hawaii, where the Westjet Voucher will cost $399 to use. And the miles you earn are more flexible with Alaska. They can be used not only on Alaska Airlines, but its partners as well, some of which include: And the card has a lower annual fee of $75, with no income requirements (compared to the requirements of $80,000 personal and $150,000 household on the West Jet card). For a few more perks, you could get the It has the same earn rates and voucher. But you’ll get free checked bags on Alaska Airlines for yourself and 5 others travelling on the same itinerary, and get the World Elite Mastercard perks as well for a slightly higher annual fee of $99. The rest of the cards here don’t have companion vouchers, but instead will just earn you more rewards when compared to the base 1.5% earn rate of the West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard. And how could we not talk about our #1 ranked credit card, the With this card, you’ll earn up to 5 Amex Membership rewards points per $1 spent. Maximize the chart, and you can get a value of up to 1.75 cents per point. On a typical $2,000 monthly spend, you’d earn 51,600 points every year. That’s a return of up to 3.76% – 2.5 times better than the standard 1.5% of the West Jet card. You can also pay for any travel purchase you make with the card using your points, where each point is worth 1 cent, and you’ve got a return of 2.15% – still better than West Jet. And there are options to transfer to Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors, as well as a host of other redemption options. You can redeem to these 6 airlines, including Aeroplan and British Airways at 1:1 ratios: We’ll focus on Aeroplan, which for most people will be the transfer option of choice. We value an Aeroplan mile at up to 2.5 cents when redeemed for flights within North America. Earning up to 2 points per $1 spent, based on a typical monthly spend you’d earn 33,000 points per year, giving a return of up to 3.44% – more than double what West Jet gives. And if the airline transfers don’t work out, you’ve got all the Amex Membership Rewards options listed above to fall back on as well. You’ll earn up to 1.5 miles per $1 spent on your purchases. A typical $2,000 monthly spend would give you 28,500 miles per year. That’s a return of 2.97% – almost double that of West Jet.

One airport lounge program that has been on our radar recently is the Mastercard Airport Experiences Provided by Lounge Key. If you have never heard of Mastercard Airport Experiences it’s probably because there are not many Canadian credit cards that offer access to this lounge program. With over 1,000 locations worldwide, Canadians can register to access these lounges simply by having the right Mastercard in their wallet. Airport lounges like this one give you a little extra comfort and space to enjoy some “you time,” making the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. Mastercard Airport Experience is a lounge network with over 1,000 lounges worldwide in over 400 airports and in 120 countries. This airport lounge program allows cardholders to use their Mastercard to gain access to the lounge, allowing them to skip the annoyance of carrying one more card in their wallet. Mastercard Airport Experiences will also give members deals at select airport restaurants, spas, and retail outlets. Aside from giving you access to a comfortable lounge, the airport “experience” program allows members to look up an airport they are traveling to and look for any exclusive offers in that location. They may not have a lounge where you are heading, but how about a coupon for a meal while you’re there? These offers change and vary depending on where you’re traveling to and the codes you receive do expire within a few hours. But if you’re lucky, you could score some pretty great deals. As mentioned above, there are not many Canadian credit cards that come with access to this exclusive lounge. However, BMO recently announced 5 different credit cards that come with this great benefit (starting August 8, 2018): While all 5 of these BMO cards will grant you basic membership in Mastercard Airport Experiences, only the BMO World Elite Mastercard and the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard will give you complimentary passes to the lounge – 4 annual passes and 2 annual passes respectively. all carry access to this lounge, although none of these cards will give you any complimentary passes (Read: Not free). If you’re one of our Alberta readers, you could also get access to this program and 2 complimentary annual passes through the ATB World Elite Mastercard. Some lounge programs will allow you to purchase a membership by paying an annual fee. However, as far as we can tell from our research, there is no way to gain access to one of these lounges through Lounge Key unless you have an eligible Mastercard. And if you don’t have any complimentary passes, each visit to a Mastercard Airport Experience lounge is going to cost you $32 US for you and any guests you might have, and this charge will be directly applied to your Mastercard credit card. Please note: Different locations have different rules about the number of guests you can bring and whether or not children are allowed. Be sure to check out the policies of the location you will be visiting before you arrive. Priority Pass lets anyone become a member, as long as they are willing to pay for it, which is nice if you’re not really looking to add another credit card to your wallet. However, from our research, it seems that in other areas of the world all World Elite cardholders have access to Mastercard Airport Experiences. Whether or not it will be moving that way for Canadians, we’re not sure. But the more people who are allowed in, the less exclusive it becomes, so that is something to keep in mind if exclusivity is important to you. What is clear is that more and more Mastercards are beginning to become part of this program and our expectation is that we will see more announcements like the recent one from BMO in the near future. One clear advantage Mastercard Airport Experiences has though is that you don’t need to carry around a membership card and you get to enjoy offers and deals on top of access to a lounge. As such, we have developed a process to safely dispose of your card.
